Eskdale Junior School
Think like an … Athlete!
Rationale:
Our curriculum is underpinned by our five core values, supporting pupils' academic and personal development, making learning and knowledge gain, meaningful, developing pupil’s character and preparing them to be successful Eskdalers now and into the future. We achieve this by introducing pupils to the idea of our ‘Think like a...’ approach to their learning, enabling them to become a little more ‘expert’.
‘Think like a…’, including talk and read like an Athlete is central to pupils' learning and designed to develop pupil oracy and vocabulary skills to enable them to use Athletic language meaningfully when talking about PE.
When reading like an Athlete, pupils have opportunities to use specific vocabulary to develop skills. This can be used for an instructional purpose and as a personal development criteria.
When Thinking like an Athlete, pupils will acquire knowledge, enabling them to skilfully attempt to apply their understanding. The PE curriculum is organised into a particular set of Athletic disciplines, including running, jumping, catching, throwing and striking, attack and defence, movement, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities. Pupils can revisit key concepts within those disciplines throughout their Key Stage 2 journey at increasing degrees of challenge and complexity.
In line with the National Curriculum, our pupils are given the opportunity to:
- Develop a love of being active and provide opportunities to be active for sustained periods of time
- Understand how to stay healthy and why it is important
- Analyse and evaluate the skills needed for specific sports
- Improve their skills and apply them to sporting situations
- Engage in meaningful competition at an appropriate level, including striving for personal bests
- Experience and excel in a broad range of physical activities and sports
- Develop positive character traits, such as teamwork and resilience
The teaching of PE is delivered through our method of teaching (pedagogy), which incorporates meta-cognitive strategies to enable all pupils to retain the learning of knowledge. This is typically applied through our process model by:
- Analysis – analysing the skills needed for a sport or activity, as well as pitch markings, rules and features.
- Skills – develop skills discretely which are needed for the sport or activity.
- Practice – putting their skills into a context, including small sided or modified games.
- Competition/Performance – taking part in competition or performances, either in lessons or as part of both intra and inter school competitions.
How we adapt the P. E Curriculum for SEND Pupils
As part of our quality first approach to teaching, we use a range of strategies to support SEND pupils to access the P.E curriculum. The document below details examples of the adaptations that are made to support pupils in class.
